Brazilian vs. Bikini vs. French Bikini Wax: Which One Should You Book?

"Bikini wax" can mean four different things depending on who you ask. Booking the wrong one is the most common first-timer mix-up. Here's what each service removes, so you can book with confidence.

The four bikini services at a glance

ServiceWhat's removedGood fit if you want
Bikini line waxHair outside the edges of a standard swimsuit or underwear line.A tidy look in a swimsuit with minimal waxing.
Full bikini waxThe bikini line plus more from the top and sides, leaving hair on the front.Room for higher-cut swimwear while keeping coverage.
French bikini waxMost of the front and sides, leaving a strip or small triangle. The area between the cheeks is usually left alone.Close to a Brazilian, without the back.
Brazilian waxEverything: front, labia, and between the cheeks. A strip or triangle is optional.Fully smooth, or nearly so.

Names vary from studio to studio. When you book, tell your waxer what you want left, if anything. That beats any service name.

Bikini line wax

The lightest option. It's a quick cleanup for anything that shows outside your swimsuit and takes about 15 minutes. If you've never waxed before and want to ease in, start here.

Full bikini wax

A full bikini goes further in from the top and sides of the bikini line, which works well with higher-cut suits. Hair on the front stays, it's just shaped closer.

French bikini wax

A French bikini (sometimes searched as "French bikini line") removes the front and the labia area but usually leaves the back alone. You'll typically keep a landing strip or small triangle. It's a popular middle ground for people who want a mostly bare look without the full Brazilian.

Brazilian wax

A Brazilian removes hair from the entire area, front to back. You can keep a strip or go fully bare. If you're booking your first one, read our first Brazilian wax guide for prep and aftercare.

Which hurts least?

Less area means less waxing, so a bikini line wax is the easiest. That said, discomfort depends more on how regularly you wax than on the service. With consistent appointments every three to five weeks, hair grows back finer and every service gets easier.

What wax is best for the bikini area?

Hard wax. It grips the hair rather than the skin, so it's gentler on thin, sensitive skin. Many studios use professional hard waxes formulated for Brazilians. What matters most is that the studio uses hard wax for intimate areas and a fresh applicator every time.

Aftercare is the same for all four

For 24 to 48 hours, avoid heat, sweat, tight clothing, and friction. From day three, exfoliate gently a few times a week to prevent ingrown hairs.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a bikini wax and a Brazilian wax?

A bikini wax removes hair outside the swimsuit line. A Brazilian removes hair from the entire area, including the front, labia, and between the cheeks.

What is a French bikini wax?

A French bikini removes most hair from the front and sides and usually leaves a strip or triangle. Unlike a Brazilian, it typically leaves the area between the cheeks alone.

Which bikini wax should I get first?

If you're new to waxing, a bikini line or full bikini is an easy start. If you already know you want a fully smooth result, a Brazilian is fine as a first wax.
