Your First Brazilian Wax: How to Prep, What to Expect, and Aftercare
A Brazilian wax is one of the most booked services in any wax studio, and one of the most searched. If it's your first, the appointment is much easier when you know what's coming. Here is the full rundown, from how long your hair should be to what to skip for two days afterward.
What is a Brazilian wax?
A Brazilian wax (sometimes shortened to "braz wax") removes hair from the entire bikini area: the front, the labia, and between the cheeks. You can choose to leave a small strip or triangle in front, or go completely bare. A full Brazilian wax usually means everything comes off.
That differs from a standard bikini wax, which only cleans up what shows outside a swimsuit. If you're deciding between the two, our Brazilian vs. bikini vs. French bikini wax guide breaks down each one.
How to prep for your appointment
Let your hair grow to about 1/4 inch
Wax needs something to grip. Hair about the length of a grain of rice (roughly two to three weeks after shaving) gives the cleanest result. If it's much longer, don't trim it yourself; your waxer will trim it to the right length.
Exfoliate gently a day or two before
A soft scrub or exfoliating mitt one to two days before lifts dead skin so hair releases more easily. Skip exfoliating the day of, since freshly scrubbed skin is more sensitive.
Tell us about medications and skincare
Retinoids, some acne medications, and certain antibiotics make skin more fragile. If you've taken oral isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past six months, waxing isn't safe yet. Let us know about anything you're using so we can adjust or reschedule.
Plan around your cycle if you can
Skin is often more sensitive in the days just before and during your period. You can still come in during your period with a tampon or cup, but if you have flexibility, the week after tends to be more comfortable.
Skip caffeine and alcohol right before
Both can make skin more sensitive. Show up hydrated, in loose, breathable clothing.
What happens during a Brazilian wax
Your first appointment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. You'll undress from the waist down in a private room, and your waxer will cleanse the area and work in small sections.
Most professional studios use hard wax for Brazilians. Hard wax is applied warm, cools, and shrink-wraps around the hair rather than sticking to the skin, which makes it gentler on delicate areas. Your waxer will ask you to shift positions a few times. That's normal, and there's nothing they haven't seen before.
Does it hurt?
The first one stings the most. Each pull is quick, and your waxer will press on the area right after to calm it. Most clients find the second and third appointments noticeably easier, because hair grows back finer and sparser with regular waxing.
Brazilian wax aftercare
The first 24 to 48 hours matter most. Your follicles are open, so the goal is to avoid heat, friction, and bacteria.
- Skip hot tubs, saunas, pools, and hot baths.
- Skip intense workouts that make you sweat heavily.
- Skip tight leggings and synthetic underwear. Choose loose cotton.
- Skip tanning, self-tanner, and fragranced lotions on the area.
- Skip sexual activity and other friction for a day or two.
Starting around day three, exfoliate gently two to three times a week. This is the single best way to prevent ingrown hairs. If you do get a dark mark from an ingrown hair, read our guide to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
How long does a Brazilian wax last?
Most clients stay smooth for three to four weeks. Booking every three to five weeks keeps your hair on a consistent growth cycle, which makes each appointment faster and more comfortable. Shaving between appointments resets that cycle, so try to resist.
Choosing a Brazilian wax salon
Whether you search "brazilian wax salon near me" or ask a friend, look for a studio that:
- Uses a fresh applicator every time (no double-dipping).
- Uses hard wax for intimate areas.
- Is staffed by trained, licensed estheticians and keeps a clean, private treatment room.
- Asks about your skin, medications, and history before starting.
