Buccal Massage: What It Is and What to Expect

Buccal massage has a reputation as the facial that works from the inside out, literally. If you clench your jaw, wake up with a tight face, or are simply curious, here's what it is and what to expect.

What is buccal massage?

Buccal massage is a facial massage technique where the provider, wearing gloves, works the muscles of the face from both outside and inside the mouth. Working intraorally allows access to muscles that a regular facial can't reach, including the buccinator (the cheek muscle) and the masseter (the main chewing muscle).

Who is it for?

  • Jaw clenchers and teeth grinders. Releasing a tight masseter can feel like a major relief.
  • Facial tension. Stress shows up in the face. Buccal work addresses tension a surface massage doesn't reach.
  • Puffiness. Buccal massage is often paired with lymphatic drainage techniques to reduce facial puffiness.
  • Anyone wanting a more sculpted look. Many clients notice their face looks more lifted right after, as tension releases and fluid moves. The effect is temporary but builds with regular sessions.

What happens during an appointment

A session usually begins with cleansing and an external facial massage, often including lymphatic drainage strokes on the face and neck. Then, with gloved hands, your provider massages the cheeks and jaw from inside the mouth while supporting from the outside. It's an unusual sensation at first. Most people describe it as intense in tight spots, then deeply releasing.

You stay in control. You can ask for lighter pressure or a break at any point.

Buccal massage and TMJ

Many people with jaw tension seek out buccal and TMJ massage. Massage can ease muscle tightness around the jaw, but it doesn't replace dental or medical care. If you have jaw clicking, locking, or ongoing pain, see your dentist or doctor to understand what's going on.

Who should wait

Skip buccal massage if you have recent dental work, oral surgery, mouth sores, active cold sores, braces, or an infection. Let your provider know about any facial fillers or injectables so they can adjust.

Is it backed by research?

Buccal massage is newer to the spa world, and formal research is limited. Clients commonly report less jaw tension and a more relaxed, defined look. We'd rather tell you that honestly than make promises.

Pair it with lymphatic drainage

Buccal massage and lymphatic drainage complement each other: one releases deep tension, the other moves fluid. Read more about lymphatic drainage and how to choose a provider.
